Are You Pushing the Right Car? Make Goals and Stick to the Plan
Is your business going the way you want it? Or do you stuck?
Sometimes I find myself feeling the same way and want to make some big changes.
Then I remember this analogy I heard from Jimmy D. Brown, and ask myself “are you pushing the right car?“…
“You see a car and start pushing it. After a short while, it doesn’t seem to move, and you see another car, a smaller one that looks to weigh less and be easier to move.
“So you stop pushing the first car and start pushing the second.
“At the same time, someone else comes along and sees the first car and starts pushing it.
“After another short while, you realize the second car isn’t moving either and you see a third one that looks like it has a lightweight frames and weighs less.
“So you leave the second car behind and start pushing the third.
“Meanwhile, the other person is still pushing on the first car and it’s still not moving.
“Slowly though it begins to move forward, just a little bit at first but then it moves more.
“The person keeps pushing and the car keeps moving faster and faster as the momentum builds. Eventually, it’s moving pretty fast and covering a lot of distance.
“You stop pushing the third car to look at the first car moving. Now you’re even more determined to get a car moving forward so you start on a fourth, seemingly lighter, car.
“But the first car is really picking up speed now.
“You’re beginning to get frustrated, so you look for lighter cars to push. But you’re getting tired and, eventually, you decide to call it quits.
“When you turn to look at the first car, you notice both the guy and the car are nowhere in sight.”
As you guessed, that analogy can be applied to many people’s businesses, as unfortunate as that is.
If you spend your time (and money) chasing after the next “big” thing, you’re not able to stay focused on your business and your goals.
Sure, some techniques may work for you but it’s not an efficient use of your time and resources and, many more times than not it will lead to ultimate failure.
Define your specific goals (don’t make too many) and be laser focused on them.
One good way to keep that focus is to make a plan (and stick to it).
This plan will be your roadmap to your destination (your goals).
Like a road trip when you get those AAA maps or print out Google or MapQuest maps and directions, your plan will get you to your goal the more efficient and effective way as long as you don’t take any side trips.
When you are trying to build you business the destination (goals) is what is important, not the scenery, so stick to the defined route (plans).
And stop pushing so many cars!
